Why Should You Homeschool? {Ten Reasons from the Hodgepodge}

I share the benefits of homeschooling all the time. But today, it’s the children making a top ten list of the reasons they like being homeschooled. Since we have five children, it only seemed fair and mathematical to ask them to each share two reasons.

1. School outside. {translation: enjoy those pretty days}

2. Takes less time. {translation: some days we can be finished by lunch time!}

3. Vacations while others are in school. {translation: grab the bargain, off-season rates}

4. Less crowded field trips. {translation: birthday celebrations at  local destinations}

5. Math then pool. {translation: PE at the pool until it closes for the season}

6. Sleeping later. {translation: set the schedule that works for you}

7. Art taught by Nana! {translation: generations learning together}

8. More time with your family. {translation: in the middle of the morning you can spread out every last stuffed animal and play an elaborate story with your brother.}

9. “just reserved nine books at the library. I kind of love to read.” {facebook status of one of my children – translation: plenty of time for leisure reading}

10. Getting the teddy grahams! {translation: more frequent snacks?}

Even more reasons:

About Hodgepodgemom

Tricia faces a daily dose of chaos homeschooling five children – preschoolers to high schoolers. The biggest lesson she’s learned? At the end of the day – when the dishes are put away and the children are tucked in bed – truly what matters is each child’s relationship with the Lord. Raising children is a God-given privilege and, folks, the time is short.

  1. Tricia, I love your list – and when we created ours, I was shocked that 1, 3 and 6 were not listed…..but, I”m voting for 7 on your list, I love Nana’s art lessons!

    • Rebecca – we were on vacation when we talked about this list – traveling in the car :) so that one was on their minds since we were at the beach when several of the schools were having their last week. And #1 and #6 fit right with that as well.

  2. What a fun list and I love your translations. My kids comments were short too but they ‘translate’ similarly. Thanks for sharing.

  3. Great list. I love your humor. :) . Got to have a good sense of humor to homeschool all these kids, eh? Blessings to you today!

  4. Taking less time and sleeping later are on our lists, for sure! I also like just spending time together, every day.

  5. Great list!
    …but how do you homeschool so many at once? Don’t the little ones distract the older ones? I’m having that problem. They both want my attention at the same time, and when I’m working with my 7yr old, my 4year old begins to make distractions and throws me off. (Well I’m a newbbie, so perhaps I need the years of experience?!) Hehehe….
    I dnt know you, and I already think you are AMAZING :)
