Mama on Vacation: Planning and Goal Setting

In repentance and rest you will be saved, in quietness and trust is your strength… Isaiah 30:15

As mothers we sometimes live in the urgent. This hungry child, that weepy one, another needing a push on the swing…

However, it’s beneficial to step out of the urgent into the quiet, out of our regular spot and look to our source of strength. Jesus set the example. (Luke 4: 42-43)

Once a year I purposefully take the time to think on each of my five children. I set aside a special time to make goals for the next year. Homeschool goals, a life skills assessment but most importantly time in prayer for each child. How is she doing spiritually? How can we give him a bit more of challenge in this subject? What do I imagine this child like as an adult?

…The best part is now the inspiration is all out of my head and on the calendar or in my spiral notebook. Less distraction in my mother brain so I can handle the day-to-day urgent. Being in a beautiful setting really helps with planning. Being open to the Lord’s guidance and direction is key.

Click over to Habits for a Happy Home for the last post in this series. My annual planning habit is a classic post I’ve shared several times before. Because it works so well for me. I’m planning for next school year this week and next. I hope to share our new school year plans with you in the near future.

Maybe your thoughts are turning to next year as well? This post by Barb-Harmony Art Mom gave me much to consider when planning. A must read at The Curriculum Choice: Homeschooling Without Feeling Overwhelmed.

About Hodgepodgemom

Tricia faces a daily dose of chaos homeschooling five children. The biggest lesson she’s learned? At the end of the day – when the dishes are put away and the children are tucked in bed – truly what matters is each child’s relationship with the Lord. Raising children is a God-given privilege and, folks, the time is short.

So can I come and sit on your beach and plan Mr. B’s last year? I think it would help a lot to have that beautiful view. 🙂

Sigh, we have most of our planning for schoolwork done but thanks for the reminder to pray over the relationships we have and the life skills too.

I’m getting ready to do that very thing, too. (As busy as June is, though, it may have to wait til Maine.) But I’ve already begun to mull over each child, trying to line up our end goal with our daily lives.
