November World

Our November nature study grid has enjoyed a special spot on the chalkboard above the kitchen table. It’s easy to glance up then turn and take notice of our November world. One of the nature suggestions was to take a walk in the rain. So, one wet Wednesday we did just that. The Wednesday the cold front was coming in and our area was under a tornado watch. The weather was still quite warm and there was a break in the rain. Out we went.

Heard: Wind rustling leaves, blowing the last of them off the trees. Thunder in the distance. Rain tap, tapping.

“I found a rock. My rock was shiny, smooth and dirty. There was a tornado warning north of us – when we got home from our walk.” – nine-year-old

“November is...Thanksgiving, colorful and weather.” – 14-year-old

“PUDDLES!– six-year-old

I found a colorful arrangement of leaves with flowers and rocks and sticks with it too. All different colors and shapes of leaves.” – six-year-old

Back inside just as the downpour happened…”WHOA! Look Mama! Mama! Mama! It’s a river in our backyard! And it goes through the woods! It’s a huge one!” – three-year-old

Some sketched, colored maple seeds. And some stayed close to the weather alert radio. The next afternoon we followed up with a chalk pastel lesson from Nana: Tree Silhouette.

A wonderful Wednesday weather watching and noticing nature in our November world. Many thanks to Handbook of Nature Study.

About Hodgepodgemom

Tricia faces a daily dose of chaos homeschooling five children. The biggest lesson she’s learned? At the end of the day – when the dishes are put away and the children are tucked in bed – truly what matters is each child’s relationship with the Lord. Raising children is a God-given privilege and, folks, the time is short.

How did I miss this entry? I was going through my OHC carnival list and there it was ! This entry made me giggle with delight. I love that you took the opportunity to get out in the rain with your kids. They look like they really enjoyed themselves. I love the bare feet and shorts in the November rain….
Thanks for sharing your link with the OHC.

We really had great fun heading out in the rain. It had just cleared from a downpour and was sprinkling. So plenty of puddles! And, yes, it was warm enough for shorts and flip flops. But can you believe we have snow forecast for Tuesday?
