Simple Summer Nature Study

“Happiness is a quiet, perpetual rejoicing in small events.” ~ author unknown

We’re putting the pause button on summer. One of the ways we are hanging on to summer is to savor nature. Gathering flowers from the yard and making arrangements. I’ve been using my phone camera to capture blooms when we venture outside into the green of summer…

Growing things in our yard. 1. Hello beautiful little rose in the front yard. | 2. Morning glory mingles with four o’ clocks | 3. Honeybees are happy on our sunflower | 4. Cucumber and vinegar salad side for supper – thanks to Middle Girl’s garden bounty! (this I shared with Collage Friday)

Noticing zinnias and other things in Nana’s garden. Isn’t the detail marvelous?

And taking a morning trip to Mama Ann’s! Exploring the creek, hearing the birds…

Noticing flowering bushes, green tomatoes…

And caterpillars. Gulf fritillary caterpillars Aunt Mary Ann brought from her yard. A passion fruit vine for them to munch on. And time ahead watching them grow and anticipating butterflies! All are settled into the butterfly habitat. Middle Girl has measured them and is journaling progress. They’ve been named Bob, Fred and Bill. And we’ll have to enjoy Nana’s butterfly pastel again and note our art progress.

Plenty to notice with just a visit outside.

“It is an extraordinary and beautiful thing that God, in creation…works with the beauty of matter; the reality of things; the discoveries of the senses, all five of them; so that we, in turn, may hear the grass growing; see a face springing to life in love and laughter…The offerings of creation…our glimpses of truth. ~ Madeleine L’Engle

About Hodgepodgemom

Tricia faces a daily dose of chaos homeschooling five children. The biggest lesson she’s learned? At the end of the day – when the dishes are put away and the children are tucked in bed – truly what matters is each child’s relationship with the Lord. Raising children is a God-given privilege and, folks, the time is short.

Tricia, I’m sitting here, almost in tears…our time outdoors has been overrun with a huge dose of poison oak. My dd has had a break out for almost 6 weeks…and every time it goes away, it returns. WE have washed everything and she has used steroids…now, she is afraid to even leave the house…..so, thank you for sharing these beautiful pictures….I hope to ‘be back in nature’ soon!

Oh no Rebecca! That is most frustrating and painful – we went through rounds of poison ivy not long after we moved to this house and were clearing in the woods – in the late winter/early spring when things were dormant. I know you must be doing indoor sorts of things like art and journaling. And, yes, hoping you will be back in nature again very soon!
