Morning bars are a family classic from my grandmother, Mama Ann.

If I can’t make the bars right away then the children figure out some way to eat the black raspberry jelly on something.

We enjoyed these at the beach for breakfast one morning. Morning bars at the beach with a cup of coffee? Heaven.

Mama Ann’s Morning Bars

: Mama Ann’s Morning Bars

  1. 3/4 cup butter, softened
  2. 1 cup brown sugar
  3. 1 1/3 cups flour
  4. 1 teaspoon salt
  5. 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  6. 1 1/2 cup rolled oats
  7. 10 oz jelly (black raspberry jam is best!)*

  1. Cream butter and sugar.
  2. Add all other ingredients.
  3. Do not grease the pan prior to baking (use 8×8 or 9×9).
  4. Press out half of mixture into bottom of pan.
  5. Cover with black raspberry preserves.
  6. Cover top with remainder of oatmeal mixture (you can sort of press out large pieces and drop it on top).
  7. Bake at 400 for 25 minutes.
  8. Cut into squares (about 1 in) immediately after taking it out of the oven.
  9. Let cool (can eat them still warm)

You can also double the recipe. The bars freeze nicely – then can be warmed in the microwave. We also make a gluten free version with the gluten free Bisquick mix.

*the jam can be hard to find at Walmart. Publix and Kroger usually have it.

      Vicki – thanks for the reminder on FB to use freshly ground soft white wheat. I’ve done that before and they turn out beautifully. Let me know how you like them!

    Oh, yes! I used to make these raspberry oatmeal bars that were so good, but when we moved, I lost it and I have missed it. I think maybe this might be the recipe!! It is close anyway. I am going to try them and see. Either way they look wonderful. Thank you for posting it.

      I have very good memories of enjoying morning bars at the beach with Mama Ann. So, yes, almost as good. Especially with coffee on your deck 🙂

    HI! Can I use fresh black raspberries? Would I need to add some kind of liquid as berries are drier than jam? Hope to here from you soon…. picked 2 qts yesterday and need to use them fast! Thanks, Barb

      Oh goodness Barb – I have honestly never tried that myself. It sounds delicious and would probably be fabulous though – and likely turn out more like a cobbler! Yum!
