Nana’s Homemade Hummus

Folks, hummus is awfully expensive ready-made in grocery stores but it is easy to make yourself, inexpensive, and good for you!

: Nana’s Homemade Hummus

Ingredients:

  1. One 16 oz. can of chick peas (or you can get a bag of dried chickpeas MUCH cheaper; follow the directions on the bag and you will have enough peas to feed an army all the hummus you can crank out!)
  2. 1-2 Tbs. tahini (It is ground sesame paste and you can find this at local ethnic or mid-eastern section of your grocery or at DeKalb Farmer’s Market, Harry’s Market)
  3. 1-2 Tbs. olive oil
  4. Garlic (about ½ to 1 Tbs., minced finely)
  5. Juice of one lemon or lime
  6. Salt (to taste)

Directions:

  1. Now, making hummus is a personal taste test; it helps if you are hungry and can just taste and mix until you get it just right.
  2. Take your peas and put them in your food processor and grind away until those peas are a thick paste.
  3. Add the rest of the ingredients…you may have to add a little more of this or that to get to your preference of taste and hummus consistency.
  4. Store in fridge.

Preparation time: 10 minute(s)

Cooking time: none

I like to take sliced cucumbers and use them as a “dipper”, you can use hummus instead of mayonnaise on a sandwich, on a baked potato, or with chips or sturdy crackers…but you have to use it up within a week or so because there are NO preservatives in it at all. Yum!

We love hummus too. (Especially with a vegetarian hubby.) My kids won’t eat store-bought hummus but love it homemade.

What a wonderful recipe – I especially like the tip about making this when you are hungry! My 4 year old loves hummus and can eat it by the spoonful. I like dipping carrots in garlic hummus.

I don’t own a food processor. Will an electric hand-mixer work? Sounds very easy and delicious! Thank you for sharing!

    To Carrie:
Yes! I do believe that a hand mixer would work just fine; a food processor is not really necessary!

Can you make this without the Tahini? We have sesame allergies in the family.

Christina – Erin Chase’s recipe calls for tahini or natural peanut butter. Her recipe is here: http://www.5dollardinners.com/2009/01/healthy-super-bowl-snacks.html (We can’t have peanut butter at our house but we do use SunButter. I bet that would work too!) Hope that helps. ~Tricia
