The Habit of Hymns

I have an old hymnal – one passed down. I'm not sure how it came to be on my end table. But that hymnal is helping me develop the habit of hymns. I have an old hymnal – one passed down. I’m not sure how it came to be on my end table. But I’m sure glad it is there.

Heaven came down and glory filled my soul, When at the cross the Savior made me whole…

I’ve always loved the old hymns. Like many, I was fortunate to be raised on them. They are a part of me. But lately, I’ve made sure I spend part of my morning quiet time flipping through that hymnal. Pausing on a favorite. Remembering the chorus of another. Each holds such wonderful truths.

Most have the ability to transport me back to a specific time and place. When I sing Because He Lives, I can hear the organ, see that tall ceiling and picture in my mind the gorgeous stained glass of the church I grew up in.

Yesterday, I posted this excerpt as my status…

At the cross, at the cross where I first saw the light,
And the burden of my heart rolled away,
It was there by faith I received my sight,
And now I am happy all the day!

And my brother commented, “Great hymn, one of my all time favorites! Brings back memories of Athens Y camp!”

How Great Thou Art is my favorite. It was my grandfather’s favorite too.

You might not have a hymnal on your end table but you can turn to these resources:

  • Net Hymnal – search hymns online by title, first line or chorus.
  • Sacred Favorites – I found via Sky Angel TV. Listen online to great hymns, Bible studies and more.
  • Hymns Triumphant – a favorite, two volume CD set in our iTunes collection. The link will take you to the description and you can listen to excerpts as well. Or download in iTunes.

…Blessings all mine with ten thousand beside!

About Hodgepodgemom

Tricia faces a daily dose of chaos homeschooling five children. The biggest lesson she’s learned? At the end of the day – when the dishes are put away and the children are tucked in bed – truly what matters is each child’s relationship with the Lord. Tricia, You and I share such a love of hymns. I, too, often use them during my Quiet Time each day.

My favorite? Who can choose just one?!

    Here are a few:
“Victory in Jesus” because it was the first hymn I taught myself to play – in A flat! (I clearly needed a piano teacher to steer me to easier music. Ha.)

At Calvary, Jesus Keep Me Near the Cross (love!), I’ll Meet You in the Morning, How Great Thou Art, Rock of Ages, Give Me Jesus…and on and on. So many flood my mind!

Those post made me smile. 🙂 xoxo

I agree – how can you choose just one? And now I am singing, “He sought me and bought me with His redeeming blood…He loved me ‘ere I knew Him…

And all my love is due Him… singing along ladies!

I too love hymns. It’s so hard to pick favorites because I love so many as well. They are so rich with truth and I’m very thankful that we sing three hymns each Sunday morning at the beginning of our church service. I especially love Go Tell It On The Mountain at Christmastime. 🙂
